BRAIN Propagation Workshop—19 July 2009

Report by Paul May

On Sunday 18 July, the third BRAIN workshop for 2009 was presented on the Propagation of Local Rainforest Plants.
The event was held at the SOWNy Club and presented by Steven Ward who has a number of years’ experience in the nursery industry.

Steven detailed the whole process of propagation from the initial collection of seed to its extraction and cleaning, the transplantation of seedlings and their follow-up maintenance. All aspects were covered including propagation media, suitable structures and common pests and diseases. The importance of genetic diversity and plant fitness was outlined as was the need for proper hygiene. A number of useful techniques were demonstrated such as the correct way to prick out and pot seedlings. I certainly picked up some tips about propagation by cuttings. Perhaps my success rate will now improve!

The audience was attentive and bombarded Steven with numerous questions. This workshop could easily have been extended to a second session. Overall it was very informative and I think all participants left with a little more knowledge about propagation.
